Gender fluidity in fashion is nothing new.

Last year, luxury labels Saint Laurent, Gucci and Burberry all mixed masculine and feminine elements into their collections.

While brands Nicopanda and VFLIES, took it one step further, and had their skirts and dresses modelled by both men and women.

But fast-fashion mavericks, Zara, have recently faced some controversy after launching their new genderless clothing line, ‘ungendered’ (thanks to fashionista Lyndylou). At first, Zara were praised for their progressive forward-thinking, until the clothes were reviewed online.

The collection is casual, and made up of jeans, t-shirts and sweaters modelled by men and women. A few fashion bloggers have called the un-adventurous designs a cop out, causing speculation on Twitter whether the ‘ungendered’ line was just a play for media attention.

Zara aren’t the first to address gender on the high street. Opening Ceremony have designed unisex clothing since 2009, and children’s brand Tootsa MacGinty only offer unisex.

From the increase in gender neutral bathrooms, to Facebook offering 56 definitions of gender for people to identify with, attitudes towards gender are definitely changing.
