The Oscars: A sneak peek of this year’s potential winners

Televised live events now present marketers with the opportunity to engage with audiences, not only during the event but before and after.

With the Oscars just round the corner, we thought we’d dive into the data and see what the digital habits of fans of the popular Oscar contenders this year might tell us.

What the fans look like
Leonardo DiCaprio (pictured), always nominated for the Oscars but never the winner until late, has the highest appeal with female audiences.

His fans tend to be over 55 years old and are most likely to be interested in books and technology.

Eddie Redmayne, who was in the same class as Prince William, appeals to the younger group of 18-24 years. His fans mostly work in the education sector are of an optimistic nature, as well as being TV enthusiasts.

Brie Larson, who bagged both the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Golden Globe Awards this year for her role in ‘Room’, has the highest appeal with female audiences. Her fans mostly fall in the age group of 25-35 years, and are likely to be working in sales and marketing or the education sector.

Saoirse Ronan, appeals most to two age categories, 18- to 24-year-olds, and the older age group being over 65 years. Her fans broadly fall into the sports, tech and TV enthusiasts category.

What movies are pulling rank
The movie ‘Spotlight’ has been included in the critics’ Top Ten Films of 2015 lists and appeals mostly to the older age group of 55-64 years. The audience tends to be mostly female, with natural leadership qualities.

The movie ‘Revenant’, appeals to both male and female audiences alike. The audience mostly falls in the broad categories of fashion, sports and tech enthusiasts.

Who’s tweeting the most?
Fifty per cent of Oscar related tweets are from London, with 10% of the tweets referencing the Baftas.

Trending Hashtags and Top Mentions
The current top trending topic is #OscarsSoWhite, followed by #Oscars2016 and #Oscars.

Interestingly movies are being tweeted about more than actors with Spotlight leading the way.
